![]() Used Golf IronsIf you're fed up with your current clubs, or you are buying an initial set of clubs for yourself or someone else, then used golf irons are a great way to go. You can often get a great set of used golf irons for a fraction of the cost of new clubs, and sometimes you wind up with a very high quality set of clubs for very little money. Buying used golf irons makes a lot of sense for a beginning or medium skill level golfer, even for an advanced player for that matter, but the important thing in buying used irons is that they are the right clubs for you. The brand name is really secondary to properly matching the clubs with your body type and swing. The most important thing in buying golf clubs is that the clubs match you. There are several important factors to consider. First of all, some players need to get customized clubs in regards to the length of the shaft. Any competent golf shop knows how to measure from the fingertips to the ground, or whatever technique they use to determine if a player needs a nonstandard length on his or her shafts. In my case, I had to have my shafts an extra inch long on every one of my irons. Imagine if someone bought my clubs used who was of a totally different body type. He would have a terrible time with my clubs, and they probably would mess up his swing. So be very careful with knowing shaft length. You should measure the length of a known club and compare it with the used golf irons you are contemplating buying. Another very important factor is shaft flex. If you are a long hitter who takes a home run swing, you will need stiff shafts. If you have a slower easier swing, you will need more flexible shafts. Again, a good golf shop salesman knows how to determine this. A swing speed machine is the ultimate way to determine this; in fact if you know of a golf shop in town that has one of these machines, you should find out what your swing speed is. It's always a good thing to know, especially if you want to improve on it. So make sure that you know your swing speed and what type of flex you need on your shafts. Always be sure that any used golf irons you buy have the right flex for you. Ignore this one at your peril. Also important is the blade type itself. Most clubs made these days are perimeter-weighted, meaning that the perimeter of the blade of the club has more thickness and metal and thus when you make contact with the ball on an area of the club close to the edge you will get more power. This style of club is beneficial to players who do not always hit the ball on the sweet spot, namely beginners and, honestly, the majority of players. There are still some of the old blade style irons out there, and some are very fine clubs and worth a lot of money. But these clubs are not perimeter-weighted, and should only be used by low handicap players. Lastly worth mentioning is that some clubs are made to correct a swing fault such as a slice or a hook. Look out for this when buying used golf irons -- fortunately most golf clubs that are made specially to correct someone's fault have a designation on them that will clue you in to this. So if you see any special qualifying characters or numbers after the basic model name or number of the club, be wary of this and check it out.
